Rob Hunter literally grew up among the vines in northern California. As a boy, he spent countless harvests learning from the seasoned crews in his father’s vineyards at Hunter Farms. After completion of his studies at UC Davis, what began as an amateur foray into the world of garagiste winemaking has blossomed into a quest to craft the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, bottled under the proprietary Hunter III Wines label.
Rob Hunter’s professional winemaking career began at Groth Vineyards & Winery, followed by a position as winemaker at Robert Keenan Winery, Lyeth, Markham Vineyards, Sterling Vineyards and Bennett Lane Winery. While making wines for Hunter III, Rob is also the winemaker for Y3 Wines and for his father at Robert Hunter Winery. Rob’s ongoing Consulting Practice has included Winemaking for Charter Oak Winery, The Terraces Winery, Jack Brooks Wines & James Konrad; and the startups of Crossing Paths Wines, and of Cliff Bar Family Winery.
As assistant winemaker to Nils Venge at Groth Vineyards & Winery, Rob was on the team honored by the critic Robert Parker, Jr. with a perfect 100 score for the 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon they produced. Even so, Rob is sure that he has yet to reach the pinnacle of his career with Hunter III.

Rob’s quest for perfection extends into his personal life as well, where he has developed a great love for the intricacies of finished carpentry and music, two distinct arts he credits with aiding his pursuits as a winemaker. Says Rob, “My goal is to create the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Nothing less.”
