My father founded Robert Hunter Winery in the early 1980’s and it was through watching him that my interest in winemaking began to flourish. Upon graduation from UC Davis I settled in Napa Valley and was fortunate enough to work for such esteemed wineries as Domaine Chandon, Schramsberg, Groth, Robert Keenan, Lyeth, and Markham. Most recently I was the VP and Director of Winemaking for Sterling Vineyards before deciding to branch out on my own. Hunter III Wines was founded in 2004 and my debut wine is a phenomenal Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. In addition to running Hunter III, I am also the Winemaker for Bennett Lane Winery and consult for Charter Oak Winery, Y3 Winery, Dada Wines, Jack Brooks Vineyard and my father at Robert Hunter Winery. Why Hunter III? The answer is simple: I am Robert E. Hunter the third, and I represent three generations of the Hunter Family. Will there be three generations of Hunter winemakers? That remains to be seen, as my daughter Haley is still only in elementary school. For the moment it is my father and me and perhaps my Labrador Riley, who considers himself my assistant winemaker and unofficial vineyard manager.
